Kardinia Clydesdales

since 1966

About Us

For our family the love of horses began with George Wiltshire who after returning from WW1 established his home and farm at Undera working the land with the horses. This love for the heavy horse was passed down to his son Jeffrey Wiltshire who would sit upon his fathers knee as a young 3 year old and drive the horses. Jeffrey's love for horses continued throughout his life and in 1966 he established Kardinia Clydesdale Stud with the purchase of his first mare Valmont Dot from George Cox of the prominent, Valmont Clydesdale Stud. Dot was purchased in foal to imported stallion, Balwill Print. The first Kardinia filly born to this mare was Kardinia Rose.Valmont Dot with Balwill Print went on to breed another three fillies in succession giving the Kardinia Stud an excellent beginning. These early mares then bred four colts between them. All were kept as stallions and became a very unique sight at various shows and festivals as they worked together side by side in the team with the Kardinia mares.

By the mid 1980's numbers of Kardinia Clydesdales had reached large numbers and Jeffrey's four sons were beginning to establish their own families and personal interests, so it was decided in 1987 to have a dispersal sale to reduce stock and minimize numbers. Although son Daryl and wife Junita continued on assisting Jeffrey with the clydesdales throughout the 1990's by continuing Jeffrey's successful Clydesdale Schools and establishing the home farm as a tourist destination for bus groups to experience life in the old days, Jeffrey's age and ill health began to catch up with him. By the year 2000 numbers had dwindled considerably with only one registered home bred stallion and mare remaining along with a few other Clydesdales.

It was decided after a street parade in nearby Kyabram where Jeffrey drove the horses in a wagon surrounded by his grandchildren, the horses would not return to the family farm but would instead travel to their new home at Daryl and Junita's farm in nearby Lancaster and the stud and horses would be later transferred into their name.

It wasn't until 2003 that the next generation of Kardinia Clydesdales was born. The only remaining Kardinia mare, Kardinia Marigold produced two fillies to give the stud a much needed new start. This along with the purchase of some quality new bloodlines, Kardinia Clydesdales grew out of their home at Lancaster so decided to move to their current tranquil location at nearby Dongala.

Kardinia Clydesdale Stud continues to strive to breed quality CCHS registered Clydesdales of Australian and imported bloodlines, retaining traditions of yesterday, quality of today and improving for the future.

We continue today in the same love our Grandfather George and father Jeffrey had for the beloved Clydesdale with our children (the 4th Generation) Amy, Jake, Emily, Thomas & Mitchell and their partners; and we look forward to sharing this love with our grandchildren (5th Generation) Arlo, Evie, Arianna & Elloise
